Plum wood wedding goblets

Someone gave be the branch from a plum tree recently and it was just the right size to make goblets from. I have never worked with plum wood before but in general fruit and nut woods are supposed to make pretty good turning woods so I was excited to give this a try.

The first goblet came out beautifully and I quite liked the contrast of the pale light sapwood with the darker heartwood and the inner layer of bark.

The second goblet that I made to go with unfortunately did not come out as planned. The piece of wood that I started with had a slight bend and I miscalculated what I would be able to get out of it.

I tried again with straighter piece of wood and managed to get a much better match.

Just as a note I have stopped interlocking the rings on these goblets since finding out more about the tradition that they come from. The are based on a 17th century Celtic tradition that requires that the rings and goblet be made from a single piece of wood so that the rings remain unbroken. The rings symbolize strength, unity & eternity for the couple being married.
